Families needed for a study on how children learn English
The Simon Fraser Phonological Processing Lab is looking for children ages 4-8 who either only speak English or have just started learning English within the past 6-12 months.
The Simon Fraser Phonological Processing Lab would like your help with a research study on how children learn English!
If your child:
- Only speaks English
- OR Has just started learning English within the past 6-12 months
This is how the study works: Your child will play some word and sound games with an experimenter at a laptop. In some games, they will name familiar objects or repeat their names, and pick out which picture matches familiar words. Later, they will listen to two aliens who are learning English, and judge how well they produce similar and different words, in English and the alien language. They will also play a game in which they repeat nonsense words. We will also ask you to fill out a questionnaire about how your child has learned and is still learning words and languages. Your child will receive a hearing screening.
This experiment takes less than an hour. You can either VISIT us at SFU’s Burnaby campus, scheduled at your convenience, OR we can visit you at your home.
